\"free<\/a>Why do we still have to pay for Internet\u00a0access in hotels? Do you realize how little\u00a0it costs for them to provide it as a\u00a0service? I know that not everyone travels\u00a0with a laptop, but practically everyone I\u00a0know has either a smartphone, iPad or\u00a0tablet of some kind, even my mother!<\/p>\n

As the founder of PC Tech Associates, I’ve\u00a0provided tech support to small businesses\u00a0since 1996 – before people even HAD\u00a0computers in their homes, let alone\u00a0Internet. So, I don’t understand why\u00a0hotels continue to charge fees for\u00a0Internet usage – wired or WiFi. Some\u00a0might say, that while the\u00a0equipment\/hardware is cheaper today,\u00a0the maintenance is what keeps the costs\u00a0high and therefore, they’re passing it on\u00a0to the hotel guests. Maintaining a network\u00a0is really not that expensive, computer\u00a0techs aren’t as expensive as they used to\u00a0be, and there are lots of them.<\/p>\n

The hotels could further argue that since\u00a0they have guests who don’t use\/need\u00a0Internet service, why should those people\u00a0have to pay for a service that they don’t\u00a0use? But, hotels offer other services that \u00a0not all guests take advantage of. For\u00a0instance, what is the percentage of people\u00a0who use a gym or swimming pool during\u00a0their stay versus the percentage of those\u00a0who WOULD use Internet service if there\u00a0was no charge for it? How much does it\u00a0cost to maintain that pool or the gym? I\u00a0guarantee that if you add up the cost per\u00a0square foot to have the pool plus\u00a0the costs to maintain it, that, by far\u00a0outweighs the costs of providing free\u00a0Internet to all the guests!<\/p>\n

Sure, there are lower-priced, three-star\u00a0chains that offer free Wifi, but I’m talking\u00a0about the four- and five-star hotels where\u00a0I pay a premium already – I expect to find\u00a0it included and IN my room! Bottom line\u00a0is that guests want Internet, and hotels\u00a0are taking advantage of that by continuing\u00a0to charge for it. Until we start demanding\u00a0it by speaking out or choosing only hotels\u00a0that include it, we’ll continue to pay extra\u00a0for it.
